Fossils of Parks Township - Catalog

An interactive specimen catalog. It uses several things to speed up loading and consumption. Lazy-loaded photos, browser history objects, and local data storage all help achieve quick initial and return visit loading.

  • Interactive search filtering. Parses data in the browser.
  • Return links for searches, modal pages, and specimen pages.
  • Local storage with versioning for the data set. There's no need to fetch it again if it's not updated.
  • Custom PHP thumbnailing creates optimized thumbnails and large-sized specimen photos

Temporal Range Chart Generator

This tool creates temporal range charts within geologic time. The result is drawn using canvas.

  • Ability to add a creature and show its place on the timeline
  • Timeline is generated using the canvas element.
  • Future upgrades include multiple creatures and saved data using local storage.

Orbits

An exploration of CSS animation and JS using scaled orbit speeds and planet sizes.

Current working scales are:

  • Orbit Speed: 20 seconds per 1 earth year.
  • Sun Size: 80,000KM per pixel.
  • Planet Size: 1,000KM per pixel.
  • Orbit Size: 300,000KM per pixel.

The Speed of Light

A real-time scaled demonstration of the speed of light. Watch as a beam of light travels across the solar system.

Planets

A relative size conversion tool. Measures one object and converts it for the rest. For example, if the Sun were set to 1000cm, the Earth would be 9.16cm, and the orbit of Earth around the sun would be 214942.53cm if building a scale model.

Time Dilation

Calculator for showing time dilation. Enter a length of time and a percent speed of light to get a relative time passage number.
